Lawrence G. "LG" Murphy is the corrupt ranch owner who ordered rival ranch owner, John Tunstall, murdered. Throughout the film, the Regulators, who were all wayward young men until Tunstall took them in, have been seeking vengeance against Murphy's men for his murder, and now it's Murphy's turn to exact some vengeance. Even though Murphy believes he has Billy the Kid and his cohorts surrounded in the home of Alex McSween, he is wrong. Dead wrong.
After a furious gun battle between the Regulators, Murphy's cronies and the soldiers are sent in to try and keep the peace, but Billy manages to escape, along with a few of the other outlaws (in fact, Murphy manages to kill two of them during this breakout). They ride off down the street and turn a corner, leaving a seething Murphy yelling for Colonel Dudley and his troops to pursue them.
He's then dumbstruck as he turns and sees Billy at the end of the street on his horse, having turned back to pay Murphy back, once and for all, for Tunstall's murder. Billy says, more to himself than to Murphy, "Reap it, Murphy, you son of a bitch"; a reference to a line spoken earlier when Billy killed Sheriff Brady. He then shoots Murphy in the centre in the forehead. Murphy spins around, eyes wide and mouth agape, and manages to stand there momentarily agog with a bullet hole in his forehead, before finally collapsing to the ground and dying.
I really thought this was a nicely handled death scene, rarely do you find a villain so worthy of death as Murphy - credit for which must go to Jack Palance!
It is interesting that it is such a simple death (a head shot) and yet it is still a very memorable one for me. Script writers should take note!!
