While Wolverine has a fight with Lady Deathstrike, Jean Grey has a fight with her boyfriend. Cyclops, who is under Stryker's control, tries to fry her into next week with his laser beam, which Jean blocks with her mutant abilities. This results in a large force explosion, breaking the dam wall at Alkali Lake and injuring Jean by throwing her against a turbine, hurting her leg.

Let's skip forward 20 minutes or so. The X-Men are trying to escape the dam, which is about to break (thanks Cyclops and Jean!) in their jet. Unfortunately the jet will not start. Jean exits and goes outside, where she starts to control the jet with her abilities. As the dam breaks, she blocks all attempt at rescue, including Nightcrawler's teleporting ability.

The wave now reaches the jet, but Jean blocks it's path with her other hand, controlling the jet with the other. She then sends a message to the X-Men inside via Xaiver, telling them "this is the only way" before getting them out of there, as flames start to surround her (geek alert: Phoenix flames). She then surrenders herself to the wave that engulfs her.

She's not quite dead, though...[Why is this "former friends"? - OB]
