Louis Pinnock is a working class guy living in a world where African-Americans are the social elite and whites are living in ghettos as the lower class. Fired by Thaddeus Thomas, his boss, over a mistake Louis kidnaps him in order to get much-needed back pay for the days he missed due to his firing, which triggered a chain of misfortunes to befall him, including the eviction of his family from their apartment.
Over the course of the film, Thad and Louis have started to develop an odd friendship, which is jeopardized by Thad's attempts to escape. However, Thad has a (what looks like to me) heart attack and may die unless he can get help. His friend Stanley, helping Louis reluctantly until now, leaves, not wanting to get caught by the police.
As they are on a street in the middle of the night and Louis has a gun, Louis starts firing the gun in order to get help, even shooting a shop window to set off an alarm.
It is not long before a police car arrives, and Louis is ordered to put his hands up. However the officers notice the gun in Louis’ hand and, instead of ordering Louis to drop the gun, they riddle him with bullets. An agonized Thad can only look on as Louis' corpse hits the street, and more squad cars arrive.
