Most of Owsla is either in full retreat, or being chewed up by the dog that has been led up to the warren by Dandelion, Hazel et al.

The General is fearless and tries to convince his men (or rabbits), that dogs are not dangerous. His will alone might have made them think again, were it not for the ground being bathed with rabbit blood and corpses of comrades.

Cut to:

Dog appearing from around the tree, rabbit corpse in it's mouth. Seeing the full bodied General as a particularly appetising meal, he drops the rabbit he is holding and lunges for the General. Woundwort, not prepared to go without a fight, launches himself at the dog.

The death scene is not witnessed and, as the narrator goes on to say, mothers came to use the General's myth as a behavioural tool with their kittens.

The dog lunges for the General....

....the General lunges for the dog

You gotta admire a bunny with confidence. "dogs aren't dangerous" Are great last word for a rabbit.

TOTALLY agree!!!!
When i first watched Watership Down i was six or seven....scared the crap out of me and when i tried to watch it again the evil rabbit was still freaky!!
I think i'll stick to fluffy, happy Disney movies ^_^

I had been introduced to scary/horror movies at an early age, so it didn't really frighten me much - just the fact that this was probably going on at the time in real life too scared me the most...

The only part of Watership Down that scared me was the beginning part about the vision of the field of blood. Other than that, it didn't affect me much, and I was mostly indifferent towards Woundwort. I love the book, though, and the TV series.

Offscreen Killing?

I seem to be saying that alot today...

hehe, this is as offscreen killing as it gets. grinning smiley

I love this film, it really is a lovely tale, and i have to admit that i still feel a little bit choked up when Hazel lays down on the ground takes those final breaths and dies.

It is funny, i can sit and watch people being eviscerated all day without much of a care in the world, but seeing a cartoon rabbit die of old age is another matter......

Do you think General. Woundwort, put up a good fight?
Comment 9 by 'Kooshmeister' (reply to this comment)
Probably. He's pretty much the fiercest rabbit that ever lived.
Comment 10 by 'old bluffer' (reply to this comment)
With perhaps one exception...

The field of blood was creepy, yes. General Woundwort was creepy, yes. But the part that scared me the most as a kid(and still gives me a slight chill now) is the flashback Captain Holly had where the old den was destroyed by the land developers (especially when all the rabbits are seen dying from the poison gasses!).
