Cole has been haunted all his life by the memory of seeing a man shot to death in an airport.

Years later, Cole is recruited to go back into the past to save the world from a gang who are aiming to unleash a deadly plague. The chief suspect is the insane son of reputed virologist, Leland Goines. His mission is not to stop them, but to get enough information to help the people in the present.

Having eventually realised that the gang he was monitoring were no threat, Cole determines to stay in the past with [Kathryn] Railly, his psychiatrist/lover. However, as they are checking in at the airport, Cole notices a man who worked in Goines’ lab and, putting two and two together, Cole realises that this is the bio-terrorist. Cole chases the lab assistant through the airport, forcing his way past the guards at the security gate (much to the annoyance of the trigger happy police).

The police aim and shoot Cole, who falls to the ground and, as his life ebbs away, he looks up to see a startled young boy - himself - looking back at him.
