Hector knew he was doomed from the moment he pulled Achilles' helmet from his head after killing him in fair combat and realising that it was actually Patroclus, Achilles cousin and lover.
It is with awe-inspiring courage therefore, that when Achilles appears outside the city, demanding bloodthirsty revenge, that Hector goes forth to meet him. Once there, he gives his onlooking younger brother Paris a lesson on how to die like a man, as he fights superbly and doesn't show fear even when it is obvious he is outclassed.
Achilles' skills are godlike and there is never any doubt as to the final outcome, even though Hector manages to defend against his signature "leaping thrust" attack. What is surprising though is how Achilles' rage at Patroclus' death overshadows his usual sense of honour. Hector's corpse is therefore unceremoniously dragged through the dust away from Troy and it is left to King Priam to shame Achilles into allowing a fitting burial later on in the film.
Memorable quote: "You will wander the underworld blind, deaf, and dumb, and all the dead will know, "This is Hector, the fool who thought he killed Achilles."
This is one of those ironic stories where the hero is the villian. Achillies manages to be the great hero of the story even though it is his army that has invaded the country of Hector. That is what makes the duel so heart wrenching. You know that Hector is bound to fight an unwinable battle because he is the defender and champion of his country. Where is Apollo when you really need him?
Stabbed, Hacked, or Slashed? Asking because I haven't seen Troy, so the exact method of death is a little uncertain to me.
would you really like to know?
It is a film well worth watching, but the method is stabbed and slashed (with a spear). I am sure Old Bluffer will update it when he gets time.
Why the white space below your post, MB?
I think Hector should be listed as Ambivalent (Major). There are no real heroes in this story.
he got stabbed in the shoulder with a spear, and then stabbed in the chest with his sword....I dont recall any hacking or slashing......
and was patroclus achille's lover???
I havent read the actual Ilyad, so i wouldnt know.
and was patroclus achille's lover???
It's somewhat debatable.
