Dr. Edgemar is an employee and spokesman for Recall Inc., and can be seen in a commercial earlier in the film as Quaid is taking the train to work.
After much of Quaid's adventures, he gets a knock on his hotel room door by Edgemar, who is unarmed. He tells Quaid that he is a holographic projection sent into Quaid’s head to guide him out, and the previous events are a hallucination brought on by a schizoid embolism caused by the memory implant he had just bought. This argument seems quite convincing, as the events up to this point are exactly what Quaid had requested from Recall.
Seeing Quaid’s certainty waver, Edgemar introduces Quaid’s wife, Lori (q.v.), who had tried to kill Quaid earlier, and to further help Quaid get back to reality Edgemar asks him to swallow a pill as a symbol of his willingness to leave his dream.
Quite rightly, this makes Quaid suspicious, and so he makes a deal with Edgemar. Putting a gun to the doctor’s head, Quaid logically states that if this is a holographic projection, then he can kill Edgemar and it won't make a difference.
Edgemar responds with this:
"It won't make the slightest difference to me, Doug, but the consequences to you will be devastating. In your mind, I'll be dead, and with no one to guide you out, you'll be stuck in permanent psychosis. The walls of reality will come crashing down. One minute, you're the saviour of the rebel cause, next thing you know you'll be Cohaagen's bosom buddy. You'll even have fantasies about alien civilizations, as you requested, but in the end, back on Earth, you'll be lobotomized! So get a grip on yourself, Doug, and put down that gun!"
As last words go, this was pretty damned impressive, and Quaid actually seems resigned to following Edgemar's advice and returning to reality. He puts the pill in his mouth and looks at Edgemar. However, as Edgemar tells him to swallow, Quaid notices a bead of sweat sliding down Edgemar’s face, giving away the fact that he's not a holographic projection, but a real human being.
Quaid wastes no time and shoots Edgemar through the forehead, leaving a nice blend of blood and brains on the wall behind the doctor and spits out the pill, which lands on Edgemar’s corpse.
One of the nice things about Total Recall is that it could be argued that Edgemar is telling the truth, Quaid is delusional and all the events in the film are just false memories. Admittedly the film doesn't try all that hard to be ambiguous, but still...
