After the Terminator has whisked John away from the T-1000, it works out that the highest probability of re-capturing this pre-pubescent oik is to infiltrate his house as one of John's foster parents.

To show just how versatile a machine it is, it impersonates John's foster mum, Janelle. The audience does not realise this until John phones home to make sure they are alright. The T-1000 disguised as Janelle answers and begins subtley probing John trying to find out his location.

Todd, John's foster parent, inadvertantly gives the game away when he tells the barking dog to shut up; dogs are used in the future to sniff out cyborgs. The T-1000 is irked by Todd, and switching hands we hear a thunk off camera as Janelle, tries to find out where John is. However, John is now suspicious, by this time and he informs the T-800 (Arnie), who takes over the phone call, and mimicking John's voice perfectly asks Janelle "what is wrong with Wolfie?". Janelle replies "Nothing is wrong, Wolfie is just fine, where are you?". Having asked John moments earlier what his dogs name was, the T-800, knows that Janelle should know that the dog is called Max. This confirms his suspicions and he hangs up the phone, intoning in a passionless voice that only Arnie can deliver, that "your foster parents are dead".

The camera then pans over to Todd and we see that the T-1000's arm has transformed into a long blade which has penetrated through the milk carton Todd was drinking, through Todd's mouth and out of the back of his head. Suffice it to say, he is dead.

Offscreen, we don't see the damage until the end of the call.

Actually, John doesn't hang up - he hands it over to the T-800, who impersonates John and asks "what's wrong with Wolfie?" The T-1000 answers that Wolfie is fine, little realizing he's been duped - the dog's name is really Max. The T-800 hangs up, before calmly summing up the situation to John: "your foster parents are dead."

couldn't mister voight just be counted as innocent bystander not baddy or ambivalent minor?
Comment 6 by 'Matt' (reply to this comment)
No, since he wasn't completely unconnected to the story.

Should Jeanette Goldstein be credited as the T-1000 instead of Robert Patrick under killed by?
