Miles Dyson, the Cyberdyne scientist responsible for developing Skynet, has just discovered what the fruits of his work will ultimately lead to, following a none to subtle demonstration by the T101 removing the skin off of his arm.
Determined to prevent this dystopian future from happening, Dyson agrees to take the Terminator, John and Sarah Connor to Cyberdyne so that they can destroy the lab and all his work. All goes well, until the four are about set to leave after rigging up explosives to blow the building up. Dyson goes back for the detonator just as several armed SWAT officers burst into the lab, guns blazing.
Dyson is caught in the crossfire and takes several hits. He goes down but manages to crawl to safety behind a desk just opposite Sarah. However he is mortally wounded and won't live for very much longer. Deciding to sacrifice himself for the greater good, Dyson wordlessly instructs Sarah to save herself with a nod of his head, and off she goes. By the time the SWAT team reaches where Dyson is, the scientist is heaving in quick, high breaths and clutching the detonator.
"I don't know how much longer I can hold it," he indicates of the detonator, which once released from his grip will set off the explosives. The SWAT team are not the sharpest tools in the box, but quickly understand the meaning of this and hurriedly vacate the premises.
Alone in the ruined laboratory, Dyson heaves his last breaths and then finally expires. He releases the detonator which proceeds to set off the explosives, ultimately demolishing the whole lab and all of Cyberdyne's hopes of ever building Skynet (at least until Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines comes along and forgets about all of this).
Actually, it's not the detonator he's holding. The detonator appears to be the pedal below the item he is holding. The item is in fact part of the huge chip (a significantly bigger version of the ones that will be used for the Terminators) that he was working on. In the Special Edition, there is an added scene where he breaks it with an axe.
I give this death added bonus for the detail (Dyson's shaking). It's very realistic, which makes it all the more effective.
