After Kirk has de-cloaked the missile launcher, Picard races up to the control panel and begins fiddling with it, in an attempt to scupper Soran's plan of attracting the Nexus (a weird wibbly-wobbly string of plasma that teleports you to a utopian reality) towards the planet by detonating the missile into the nearby Sun. He is moderately successful in this venture, but Soran races over before he can finish what he is doing (or so the audience is led to believe).

"Picard!" Soran yells, pointing his gun at the captain, "get away from that launcher!" Picard moves back, before running away. Soran rushes up the launcher to see what Picard has done. With only 3 seconds to go, spots Picard has put the holding clamps on the missile, so it won't fire. Soran, realizing what is about to happen, looks in horror. The missile explodes, but that is clearly not a big enough explosion for the movie executives of this film and so a plethora of "explosive" drums are placed strategically below the missile launcher. Suffice it to say, they also explode (in full dolby digital 5.1 surround) and Soran is dead.

Comments from Mad Movie Mathew that Mouseburger felt were more fitting on this thread than in the submission:

In the alternate ending that was rejected by test audiences (for making a mockery of Kirk's demise), Picard fiddles with the launcher after Kirk as de-cloaked it, but instead fires it, seemingly towards to the sun. Soran can only watch as it arcs back towards the planet and crashes into the distance. Soran climbs up to a platform, dropping his gun, to try and reach the Nexus, but it simply moves overhead. An angry Soran dives at Picard, who picks up Soran's gun and shoots him in mid-air. As with Kirk, this is a absolutely rubbish demise.

So, "Alternate fate"?

Yay, MB! Long time no see! Nice to see another submission up too. I agree on Alternate Fate too.

Soran probably thought before he got blown up by his own rocket launcher "PICARD! YOU SON OF A BITCH!"

What he really thought was "Hindsight tells me that I shouldn't of installed those damn clamps."
