Derek makes the fatal mistake of being the love interest of a horror movies heroine. According to the rules of these movies, as laid out in the first film, this means he is a certainty to be dead before the final curtain.

Mickey has trussed Derek up like a turkey at thanksgiving and left him on the stage for Sydney to find. As Sydney tries to untie him, Mickey reveals himself, and tries to make Sydney think that Derek is his partner in crime.

Sydney has several trust and security issues - considering her past, who can blame her - and is not sure whether to believe Derek or Mickey. The decision is moot anyway, as following a bout of colourful language by Derek, Mickey shoots him in the chest and kills him.
