Fireball is blessed with a rocket pack and a flamethrower (and a pair of asbestos Y-fronts).
With Fireball hunting down the runners, they all end up in a derelict industrial complex, which for some reason, is stocked with copious amounts of flares and petroleum in it. Richards, throwing barrels at Fireball, suggests Amber [a fellow runner, and the films bit of fluff] and he should split up. Amber ends up discovering (after a location revealing scream) that last year's winning runners, were in fact killed.
At this point Fireball corners her and prepares for the kill. From above Fireball, Richards reaches down (although how he managed to get into that position without anyone being aware is unclear) and unplugs the gas pipe from Fireball's flamethrower. Then, in one flowing, gymnastic movement he swings down and kicks Fireball in the abdomen and knocks him off his feet and into the corner.
The removal of his gas pipe seems to have rendered Fireball immobile, and his problems are compounded when Richards, lighting a flare which he had acquired earlier, throws it between Fireball's legs. Once the leaking gas hits the flare, there is a magnificent explosion and Fireball is no more.
A mildly unsatisfying death as instead of shielding his eyes, Fireball could have picked up the flare and thrown it back out of the room.
This is "Ironic" how?
erm, it is slightly ironic that Fireball is killed by a huge fireball
How were they supposed to kill a guy with a big tank of flammable chemicals on his back?
heh, there are eight million ways to die.
Hm, I didn't find thid death, unsatisfying because it was pretty ironic and cool, even though it was a little too quick..
The death of Ripley in Alien 3 was unsatisfying, not this.
