Toht is one of the Nazi allies of Belloq, who was sent to retrieve the main headpiece of the Staff of Ra, which Marion posesses.
He was also present when Belloq (q.v.) opened the Ark. At first, he laughs at the fact there is nothing but sand and dust inside, but when the Ark unleashes its power, Screaming in agony and terror, Toht ends up melting, ending his life.
The ark of the covenant proves to be too hot to handle

Yes, Kooshmeister has graciously sent in a few great screen grabs for this and a few other deaths too (many thanks!) and i will look to add them in the coming days.
Some Trivia:
The effect was achieved by sculpting muscles and layers onto a skull, made out of dental algin (used to take casts out of teeth). Using a heat lamp, they heated the sculpting. They shot at one-frame-per-second, so when it plays back, it appears to melt. SFX supervisor Richard Edlund has the skull, which is the only thing left.
I think the thing that easily gives away the fact that this footage was sped up to look like Toht was melting fast was that his glasses slope off his nose slowly and then, all of a sudden, slip of his melting face so fast it looks like they jumped from his face to below his chin.
i wish the bad guys would win in the films (unless there gang members or rebals) this efect is realy cool i wish it would hapen to ja ja binks or the charicters in whinny the pooh APART from Christifer Robin (thats just wrong) what i meen is i wish the good guy in films would get it, welll some of them but not the cool ones such as Police academyand i certanetely DON'T want to sea children get hurt. I liked the first film in Indiana Jhones & the 3rd but the temple of doom STANK

The Nazis weren't a gang as they were the ruling government of Germany and not rebels because they were trying to suppress rebellion! I think Bone Melting would like Brazil where the law-abiding bad guys win in the end
