Dietrich is a Nazi Colonel assigned to oversee Belloq's (q.v.) excavation of the Ark of the covenant, and make sure the Ark returns safely back to Germany, and his Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. After a series of run-ins with Indiana Jones, he has it taken to an island, where they can test the Ark’s authenticity before presenting it to Hitler.
Belloq opens the Ark, and when he does, spirits emerge from the Ark and attack Belloq and the Nazis. Dietrich is the first of the three main villains to die, when the spirits cause him to shrivel up like a raisin.
Dietrich does his best impression of Gollum, much to the amusement of the assembled Nazis

More trivia:
The effect was achieved by creating a hollow head, which air was then sucked out of. Simple, eh?
When he melts, his mouth turns into a rediculously long oval shape, a droopy mouth, from which blood pours out of, like a waterfall.
Well, that is of course because of his skull imploding on itself. If you look closely in that scene, you can even see blood flowing from his right ear.
Yes, and that is just freaked out version of flapjack's (the marvelous misadventures of flapjack) laugh, and also looking a little bit like the "Oh my god!" guy from troll 2. Them screaming before they die is like that.

Ya know, they oringinally PLANNED (or wanted) for dietrich to live, instead of dying when the ark was opened, instead he and a few of his men survive and pursued indy and marion in mine carts, but it was cut and was later used for "Temple of doom". That line will forever give me chills......(and imagine him saying that in your worst nightmare while lavender town music is playing in reverse)

When he screams, he makes me think of a duck having a heart attack and a fish trying to breathe on land. When he isn't he makes me think of the numbers 8 and 666, pokemons zoroark, golduck, pikachu, and gyarados, the greek god hades, lavender town(and the buryman oringinally in the oringinal red and blue), and your rival from Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal.
If you somehow manage to get ahold of freely hearing the tone from the oringinal red and blue play it when dietrich says: "I'm afraid we must be going now Dr.Jones, our prize is awaited in Berlin. But we do not wish to leave you down in that awful place all alone."
