He has not really turned to the dark side before this fight. Padme goes to find him to try and make him see the error of his ways - initially this looks to have worked until Obi Wan appears and the few threads of goodness in Anakin's mind are severed.

When it comes to movie deaths, this is defintely one that goes in my top ten. Never until seeing Robocop did I see a death scene so gripping, so nasty, so full of blood, so gut wrenching, so unforgettable. I have always loved this scene and always will. I remember when Clarence said "Well, give the man a hand!" after blowing Murphy's hand off. I laughed the first time. Great pun, Clarence. Oh, and my thanks to FOTHERMUCKER for showing it was Emil who shot the rest of Murphy's arm off. I always wondered which one of those fucker thugs did that during Murphy's mutilation. Anyway, like I said, among the best I've ever seen. Hope for more like it in future movies.

Well.. this shotgun blasts dont' penetrate Murphy's vest, thats why his internal organs are still okay. He was horrendously traumatised and bruised by the kinetic energy, all stumbly and hobbly, but the fatal shot was Clarence's pistol shot to the forehead.

Normal medical attention would have saved him if it weren't for Clarence.

it very clearly does penetrate his vest as evidenced when murphy is in the er and his clothes are taken off and we can see the wounds (funnily enough i think both of his nipples were shot off). Plus as he is being shot in the chest and stomach why would he be screaming if the bullets werent penetrating the vest
