I haven't seen this film, what should the Death Type be?

Definetly Baddy (Major). Also note that somehow he managed to appear in a Direct to Video sequel, much like Durant in Darkman, so Cheating Death applies. This was clearly intentioned as a death scene - there's no surviving a fall like that!

Baddy for sure. Cheating death should count too.

The name's Bond, James Bond.

It would only be Cheating Death if the direct-to-video movies take place after the events of this movie.

Very true - it appears the sequels are set within the timeframe of the original film.

Contrived self defence?

How was Gaston an Ambivalent? He was the bad guy. He's viewing Belle as a trophy rather than a woman and let's face it, ambivalent generally means someone who isn't a bad guy. A bad guy would definately fire an arrow and club the everloving s**t out of a defenseless creature.

It's also Contrived Self-Defence according to the view of the cliche on its page.

An interesting thing to note is that the original theatrical version had 2 additional frames in Gaston's fall. in those 2 frames, their were 2 skulls in his eyes, obviously pointing out his fate.
This can also be found in the DVD version. not the VHS though. I don't have a picture to prove it because I don't know how to rip that kind of stuff.

I agree with Flashpenny. Besides, even if whoever wrote this doesn't classify him as a villain, Disney themselves do. If you watch "House of Villains", where the various Disney villains (led by the most evil one, Jafar) take over House of Mouse, you can see Gaston among them during part of the scene where they take over House of Mouse.
