Yeah, I would say it was pointless too...

Definitely don't read the write-up, it is Spoiler Central.

Finally saw it, and I'm going to side with the critics on this one. I don't think I was this excited by a film in a very long time. Admittedly there wasn't as much plot this time, and admittedly this whole section could have been avoided had Bourne managed to question the journalist properly, but it was still great fun.

If you want to look at a real pointless sequence, try the F-35 jet scene in Die Hard 4.0. And if you think Bourne was invincible here, try McClane in the latter film... (I enjoyed it regardless)

Yes, I agree the film was a lot of fun, and Bourne doesn't quite cross over into the Arnie/Willis type of action hero.

However, I enjoyed the first film on a deeper level than just a mindless action flick, so judge this instalment accordingly.

I suppose my point would be that they had the option to keep plausibility levels grounded in reality, but chose instead to appeal to the common denominator and just pile on action sequence after action sequence.

The film was also just too similar in feel to the previous ones. Again, this is expected in throwaway popcorn films like Mission Impossible etc, but I felt Bourne deserved better.

A good example of the type of thing I mean would be the Alien Quadrilogy. Now some people may not like every film in this series (I actually do), but at least they each have their own distinct feel, whilst still keeping true to the original premise. I'd have to argue that Bourne 2 and 3 are ultimately just more of the same thing.

Matt, what did you think of the final "twist" as to who was responsible for his brainwashing? I thought it was a bit of an anti-climax after three films.

Actually, I felt the film was a natural progression from Supremacy. The events in the Liman-directed first film are quite subdued in comparison to the Greengrass-directed sequels. Supremacy was a step up in terms of action from Identity, and this was a step-up from Supremacy further still. Liman's film definetly has a more restrained feel that some might say are lacking from it's sequels.

As for the twist, it didn't really leave me unimpressed so much as wondering why did he did it after all his warnings. It was a logical conclusion, but I could have done with more info about the choice he made.

BTW, OB, the original is on TV tonight at 10pm on ITV2.
