Actually, it's not the detonator he's holding. The detonator appears to be the pedal below the item he is holding. The item is in fact part of the huge chip (a significantly bigger version of the ones that will be used for the Terminators) that he was working on. In the Special Edition, there is an added scene where he breaks it with an axe.

I give this death added bonus for the detail (Dyson's shaking). It's very realistic, which makes it all the more effective.
