It's not pointless, at all. Not only does it firmly establish Doom as a flat-out bastard and make us hate him, it also establishes Dip as being highly deadly to toons, making Roger's plight in later scenes more harrowing.
Man, I hated seeing this as a kid and I still hate seeing this scene as an adult. But I'm guessing it was needed to show that Judge Doom was indeed a heartless bastard who Eddie and Roger would have to tangle with later as he demonstrates his ruthlessness on an innocent toon shoe. The worst part was hearing the shoe whimper in pain.

Needless to say, Doom gets his just desserts at the hands of Eddie later on.

I only saw this movie for the first time recently and I was upset watching the poor shoe die sad smiley he was so cute!! I loved doc brown as well, but now, I don't think I can ever respect him again!
I felt bad for the little guy. I think they should start it over and put Diego and all of the animals he helped so far. And when Doom dips the shoe in, the Okapi from the episode "Where's Okapi's Brother" would come in and sneak behind him, and then kick him on the back. Then all the animals would save the cute and cuddly shoe. The Bobo Brothers would get rid of the Dip. But first they would have to throw Doom into the Dip and then get rid of it. And then the shoe would not die. It would survive.
It looks harmless. it's kind of cute. It reminds me of money. Get a load of a cute shoe. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha :smug:
this really upset me as a kid and still makes me very uncomfortable as the shoe is like a cute little animal. would have been less upsetting if he had dipped a more obnoxious character like the baby with the cigar. I understand it made us hate him and find him scary but it's almost too much really.
Tell me about it. This new paint thinner is driving me insane, and if I have to-- Wait! Hold on! If I must recreate the Dip and the giant Dip-mobile, my bad Toon ideas will be dissolved into gooey ink and paint! How about that?
