Because Velvet was cheated by Longdale and then threatened with gun.

Velvet was killed by Longdale as a reflex action after he'd already shot Longdale with the crossbow, and even before this it was obvious all Longdale wanted to do was escape; Longdale didn't conciously kill him as a deliberate act of betrayal.

As for Longdale cheating them, it should be added in this writeup (and the one for Longdale) that there's some question as to whether or not what Tom said was true. I know Longdale said he was "well compensated" by Mr. Christian for hiring Velvet but I don't remember him ever saying he either cheated his cohorts, or gave an exact figure of money to Tom, so now that I think about it, it could be argued Tom was just making it up to make the bad guys turn on Longdale so he could escape.

Tom Welles did figure out that Mr. Christian had cashed 4 checks from 4 different accounts in that time frame equaling one million dollars. It is understood in the plot that this one million dollars was what was spent on the snuff film. That's where Tom comes up with the one million dollar number. It is also understood that Longdale cheated his cohorts by their reaction to Welles asking, "why are you all still small time with a million dollars to spread around?"
