Rate the actual *writeups* on this site
January 05, 2007 07:10PM
As well as rating the deaths themselves, registered users can now rate the actual writeups.

We'd appreciate therefore, if you took the time to click the link at the bottom of each review, to let us know how much you enjoyed (or hated) the writeup.

This will allow new visitors to the site to quickly find the most entertaining pages to read, because we'll put a link on the front page.
Also, the main Deaths Page has been widened to show more information, and will also allow you to sort writeups in order of the new "Writeup Rating".

Thanks,

Old Bluffer

Woo... Sounds like a nice idea. I'll give them on whatever I read.

EDIT: Did one for Dante's Peak, and I got this at the top of the page...
Quote

error:1064 : You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 's Peak' AND `id` != 14 ORDER BY `seq`, `character`' at line 1

That error appears to be there just generally for titles with an apostrophe in them.

I've been going around reviewing every death review, and there have been a fair share of 'Excellent', 'Good Read' and 'Mediocre' reviews. Hope it helps.

BTW, sorry about all the posts today, I just encountered them on my travels.

Just wondering, could we have some more prominency about the ratings system on the home page? It's just that I wouldn't mind encouraging more people to vote.

Many thanks for the detailed error report, the coders say they have fixed it now.

I will also add a front page post - I was waiting until we had some ratings to point people to.

I hope I don't swamp you guys. What you've been doing lately has been top notch, to say the least.

Keep up the good work!

EDIT: Very nice update. Wonderful!

Just to keep you informed, I've requested a feature that will inform us when we read a review if the review has been edited since we last rated it.
The idea being that we'll probably rewrite some reviews with low ratings (where we agree they could be improved anyway winking smiley.

It should also be possible to bring up personalised pages showing information such as:

Which films have I rated?
Which films haven't I rated?
Which reviews have been rewritten since I rated them?

Come on people, please rate some writeups!
Provided you've registered in the forums, it only takes a single click at the bottom of each review!

But all the writeups seem outstanding! (exception of Robbie Ferrier, superior, and Tony Montana, inferior)

Well, from the ones that are rated, it appears we've been doing well. That said, it appears to be many of the memorable ones that have been rated.

I'm sure when the others get a second vote, we'll see. I voted honestly on each and every write-up on the site (which, as you might expect, took several hours)

Hmm. This raises an interesting question.... What happens when people don't like a write-up? Can bad ones be changed? I notice the one for Ray Batty is kinda thin, for instance. Not bad---but just rather minimal. Can bad ones be replaced?

Which brings me to an idea: why not have the possibility of *multiple* write ups for each page, with the top rated one appearing on the main page, and an option to "see more" for interested readers. That way the best write-ups could filter upwards (do they do something like this on imdb?). Just an idea.

Anyway, I love the improvements I notice here (I haven't been here for a while) and hope the site continues to grow and flourish.

@ aargh : thanks for the comments. What I see happening is that unpopular writeups will get revisited and revised if necessary. Then, not only will subsequent reviews hopefully get higher marks, but the next time someone who already rated the writeup goes to the page, they will be told it has been rewritten since they last read it and will be invited to re-rate it.

I can't see multiple main entries appearing per death to be honest, it would require some major reworking of the site. In rare cases we have posted alternative reviews in the "comments" section underneath the main review.

Rating our writeups does actually help the site. New visitors will see the front page link "Most entertaining writeups" and will then be more likely to read something they enjoy. For example, I'd rather new visitors read Mouse's Stranix writeup than the aforementioned Roy Batty one at the moment.

We only have a few pages of deaths left to be rated at all!

What are you waiting for? Complete the ratings!
