Well, it is used. Gruber is only called "Dr. Gruber" in the credits, but when Dean Halsey is explaining Herbert's presence to Dr. Hill, he specifically mentions "Hans Gruber."

Hopefully, he's German.

What, a third Agent Johnson? They're multiplying!

I haven't seen Live Free or Die Hard yet, admittedly, but is that character intentionally named Johnson as a callback to the two guys in the first film?

Yeah, the Agent Johnson is a homage to the first film (McClane even gives a slightly confused expression due to the name). It got a laugh out of me.
