Category suggestion: Melting?

Category suggestion: Melting?

Has anyone ever considered a category for Melting? Off the top of my head, we have at least two deaths that would definitely call into this category, Judge Doom and Toht, and eventually someone will submit the quintessinal melting scene, the Wicked Witch of the West.

TOht i suppose could fall under combustion, but there is no easy way to categorise Doom.

Maybe melting is a fair category to have - lets not forget the t-1000 melts in terminator 2, as does Arnie, and there is Gollum as well.

Icon suggestions would be most welcome - my initial thoughts are a snowman in the sun as an icon, but that could be misconstrued as cold or freezing.....any ideas?

I thought mag-Ma was categorized as acid too, however Fright night (which as you all know, I recently resubmitted) has a person melting from a stake in the heart.

So the fact he cries out "I'm melting!" over and over again doesn't count for anything? winking smiley

And as for Toht, I'd go along with Combustion for him were it not for the fact the flames never actually touch him, nor does he actually catch on fire. One could argue the proximity to the holy fire is what actually makes him melt and not just the Wrath of God, but he still visibly melts rather than burns.

Sorry, kooshmeister, i meant that Doom is diffucult to categorise under our current list, so maybe melting is a fair addition to make.

With regards to Toht, you are quite right, it is belloq that combusts before exploding, Toht does just melt.

A snowman makes me think of cold too.
How about a lit candle, dripping wax?

I think perhaps we should make it an animated gif, to actually show the act of melting. It's something that's really difficult to get across when static without multiple pictures.

Freakin' sweet icon! Does this make "Acid" a moot point now?

Is Judge Doom really not just "Acid"? The Dip IS corrosive to cartoons.

Nice icon Koosh! [nice smiley]

Acid and Melting should be separate categories surely? Melting is due to heat, Acid is due to some kind of chemical reaction.

Also, I think Gollum is combustion, not melting. Otherwise we'd have to add "melting" to every character that catches fire.

My favourite melting deaths would have to be in the Red Dwarf episode, Meltdown, where characters like Gandhi and Winnie the Pooh have to battle against people like Hitler and Caligula smiling smiley.

OB (and no, we're not going to open up submissions for TV shows, just doing films has already given Mouse an aneurism!)

I've never actually seen the Rabbit film, but I have to see that from the write-up I agree with Mr Briggs. If someone gets dissolved by paint thinner, then that is surely "acid"?

Melting, by definition, has to involve some kind of heat.

yes, i think it has to pretty clear that the person is melting, but i would not limit it to heat. rfor example, emil in robocop melts (his face drips off his skull before he gets run over) but this is not due to heat...i would still say this is melting.

In hindsight, after my initial post, i dont think Gollum is melting, he just disappears into the lava, but the t-1000 thrashes around and you see the metal melting in the magma before he dies.

OK, I see Emil from Robocop has also been given the "melting" category, as well as "acid".

Mouse, did you want to make "melting" just mean the physical appearance then?
I don't really mind, but we should try and be consistent.

In other words, are you saying that if some gets splashed with acid, and blisters, then that would be just acid - but if the acid melted their arm off, then it would be acid and melting?

And what about Gollum, do we actually see him melt or just disappear?

i would also say Doom is melting, as he visibly melts on the screen - i think that anyone who is seen to melt, for whatever reason, should be classes as melting. it does not really matter what the root cause is, be it chemical or heat.

the clear point is though that we have to see the character melt. herefore, gollum would not count, and neither would the terminator in terminator 2 as we do not see either melt. However, we do see the t-1000 melt, so he would be listed (and is).

Wait, what is the final difference between melting and acid? I thought acid might mean chemicals or such, whereas melting was caused by other means, such as extreme heat (Or pieces of wood). So what is the difference? Is melting where the entire body melts and acid where the body is only partially melted (Or burned)?
Re: Category suggestion: Melting?

I think Mr Mouseburger is saying they are completely separate categories.
Melting is when a solid bodypart visibly turns to liquid on the screen.

Acid is when a corrosive substance burns or melts a bodypart.

So, it is quite reasonable that both categories can apply.

Is that about right Mouse?
