Inspector Robert Highland is an Irish police official who is considered a "traitor" by the renegade IRA group led by Kevin O'Donnell. Highland and Sergeant Owens are tasked by Lord William Holmes with apprehending the terrorists responsible for the attempt on his life, and following the capture of Sean Miller it is Highland who is going to escort him to a place of safekeeping for O'Donnell and the others can't spring him.
Despite the use of several decoy vans, the terrorists know the route that the police will be taking thanks to Jeffrey Watkins and Dennis Cooley.
When the convoy stops at a drawbridge, it is ambushed by the villains, who blow up the escort vehicles with bombs, leaving only those in the van alive, including Sean Miller and Inspector Highland. The armoured van ensures that they'll be safe as long as they remain inside, but outside, the terrorists announce that they have taken the bridge-keeper hostage and will kill him unless they open up.
With no other choice, Highland tells the two police officers with him to do as the villains ask. This gets one of them immediately shot dead while Highland and the remaining officer are forced to lie down on the ground along with the bridge-keeper. O'Donnell then frees Miller, and prepares to execute Highland by shooting him. But Miller takes the gun from him, indicating that he'd like to do it himself.
In response to being kicked, Highland simply tells Miller to "Get on with it." Miller obliges him, shooting him in the back of the head. Then, in a fit of pure spite, he also shoots and kills the bridge-keeper and the remaining officer.
