General Tanz has been implicated in the murders of two prostitutes; one in Warsaw, the other in Paris, of which one was a German agent. Colonel Grau, from Intelligence, has been itching for some time to bust him.
Things come to a head following the plot to kill Hitler, when the branch of the conspirators in Paris, who think the assassination attempt has succeeded, instruct one of their number to proceed to General Tanz's Parisian headquarters to arrest him for treason, because they know he is loyal to Hitler, and will not go without a fight.
Colonel Grau, on the other hand, does not want Tanz shot as a traitor. He wants him hanged as a murderer. Therefore, Grau races ahead to Tanz's headquarters to arrest him before the conspirators do. Unfortunately for Grau, no sooner has he arrived and informed Tanz that he knows he is the killer and plans to arrest him, then word comes over the radio that Hitler survived the attempt on his life. Tanz uses the opportunity to draw his sidearm and shoot Grau twice in the chest, killing him.
Upon being questioned by his subordinate, Colonel Sandauer, Tanz explains that Grau was one of the conspirators, specifically the one they had sent to arrest him. Earlier in the film, Grau had confessed to having a zealous and impulsive nature. This very nature led to him getting himself killed by stupidly rushing off to see Tanz at the worst possible moment.
