Dr. Godfrey Hanson is an incredibly secretive scientist from god-knows-where. He is staying at the inn called “the Swan” on the little Scottish island of Fara. Unknown to everyone else, Hanson is gathering evidence of an invading race of heat-producing aliens on the island. However, Hanson's efforts to keep it all under wraps resort to him being considered an anti-social jerk.
After spilling his guts to innkeeper and main character Jeff Callum, Hanson's original plan for dealing with the aliens is to send Dr. Vernon Stone (q.v.) up to the island's radar outpost in order to warn the mainland. However Stone fails and is killed.
Hanson's next course of action is to, with the aid of radar techie Gerald Foster, set fire to some bails of hay in a field. The aliens are attracted to sources of heat and light and make a beeline for the fires. This enables Jeff, his wife Frankie, home wrecker Angela Roberts, and Foster's supervisor Ken Stanley to throw dynamite at the aliens.
Once again though, Hanson's plan is a miserable failure. The aliens are unharmed by the dynamite, and the unfortunate scientist, while trying to run away from them, inadvertently bumps into an alien where he gets burned to death by the intense heat radiating from its body. He does have time to throwing his arms up to shield his face in a wonderfully hammy way before he dies.
i can't harm the aliens with dynamite,or guns.but i can harm them with water but what type of water?holy water?canal water?drinking water?rain water?
Any kind of water, apparently.
Incidentally, Christopher Lee is top-billed in this film and Hanson plays a pivotal role in the story so I think Hanson ought to be "Goody (Major)" because of this.
