Bob Hayward lives on Fara Island and is a regular customer of The Swan; the local tavern run by Jeff and Frankie Callum.

Of all the islanders, Bob is the first to notice that something is amiss (aside from the bizarre midwinter heat wave the island is experiencing) when he hears the strange, high-pitched whirring noise while heading home from the pub. When he gets home, he discovers his TV is malfunctioning because of the intense heat, and it ultimately explodes.

Hearing that whirring noise again, Bob attempts to phone the Swan to inform Jeff, but all he gets is static: the heat is also interfering with the phone reception. Bob then decides to actually go to The Swan, under the pretence of going in to town to buy a new TV (the story he gives his wife, Stella).

Rather than take his bicycle though, Bob, for whatever reason, decides to take the Sedan he and Stella own. He drives off, hotly pursued by his dog Patch. When he reaches the old abandoned gravel pit, Bob stops and gets out of the car to tell the dog to go home. As he does so though, he hears that distinctive whirring sound again, and it becomes so high-pitched that it actually begins to cause Bob physical pain.

This, combined with the fact he begins to also be assailed by a sudden burst of intense heat, sends poor Bob into a screaming fit. He jumps into the car and floors it, still shrieking his head off. However, he is in no condition to drive and Bob ends up driving right into the gravel pit and rolls the car. It then promptly explodes in a massive fireball when the unseen, super-hot alien force gets close enough to ignite the has tank, turning Bob into stir-fry.
