Having failed to make sufficient amounts of money with the first instalment, the scriptwriters resurrect both Imhotep and Anck Su Namun (his bird) for a rather implausible sequel.
Having just defeated the Scorpion King, Imhotep (The Mummy) and Rick are both clinging for dear life at this point to the cliff edge, with the tortured souls of the underworld beneath them, trying to drag them down. The contrast is notable; they both shout to their spouses. Rick, the hero, tells Evelyn to "get out, go while you can" etc. while the Mummy orders Anck Su Namun to help him.
While the hero's wife braves a collapsing roof to rescue him, Anck Su Namun decides her old man just is not worth the risk and runs off. This creates some audience pathos for the poor Mummy, who has, over the course of the 2 films, desperately tried to resurrect his true love only to have him desert him – treachery, thy name is woman!
Luckily though, she trips over and falls into a pool of hungry, flesh-eating scarabs and it is safe to say that she meets her maker.
Wasn't the pit filled with scorpions, not scarabs?
yeah. scorpions did the trick. scarabs killed most of the men in the first 15 minutes of the film. then pygmies killed the curator and his men during the last 45 minutes of it.
*oops - spoiler alert*

Actually, Baltus Hafez (the curator) survives the pygmy attack and gets killed by the Scorpion King later on.
This should be in the category "Tempting Fate", as she fulfills the cliche of dying after running away in cowardice.
