Stephen Banning, a world-renowned British archaeologist and the father of the film's hero, John Banning, is in deep trouble for desecrating the tomb of Princess Ananka; high priestess of Karnak.

Like an idiot, upon finding the fabled Scroll of Life he reads from it, accidentally bringing to life Kharis, the mummified guardian of the tomb. Kharis' sudden appearance causes Stephen to have a nervous breakdown and gets him placed in the Engerfield Nursing Home for the Mentally Disordered, where he has nothing to do but sit and wait for the Mummy to track him down and finish him off.

Kharis the Mummy manages to track down and finish off Banning with the help of vengeful Karnak worshipper, Mehemet Bey(q.v.). After a particularly violent psychotic episode, Stephen has been placed in a padded cell with a window. This does not protect him as Kharis, acting under Mehemet's orders, starts breaking through the all-too-convenient window.

Banning cries out in the night for his mummy, but gets more than he bargained for.

Despite a helpful attendant earlier explaining to Stephen that yelling and banging on the door won't do any good, the first thing Stephen does is yell and bang on the door.

There is little point in padding all the walls, if you are going to leave a metal door for the loony to bash their heads on.

By the time it finally occurs to Stephen that maybe he ought to try a different tactic and use the call button on the wall by his bed, it is too late. Kharis, having fully broken through the window, enters the room and grabs Stephen as the archaeologist reaches for the call button. Kharis grips Stephen's throat in one hand, choking the old man to death and leaving his corpse sprawled on the bed.

Banning is choked noone will listen to his cries...
