An intricate trap to unmask "Job" takes place on the Eurostar train. In order to spring the trap, Hunt has had to steal a NOC list (list of undercover agents and their real identities) and pretend to sell it to Max, a weapons dealer. It was this list that caused Hunt's team to be wiped out in Prague at the beginning of the film, and due to his surviving, his government now suspects him of being a mole in the employ of Max.

With a ragtag ensemble of other agents, including the beautiful femme fatale, Claire, Ethan has stolen the list and is preparing to do an exchange with Max; the list for the identity of "Job". Max is delighted at having the list and tells Hunt he is in the baggage compartment.

[cut to] Claire enters the baggage compartment, and sees her husband, Jim. With agents on board the train she is nervous, so she tells Jim to take the money and "let Ethan take the blame", thereby implicating herself as part of the plot. Jim is silent. The fact that her husband had shrunk to the size of a pygmy is not noticed by Claire and only when Jim tears his face off, revealing it to be Ethan wearing a rubber mask, does she realise her rookie mistake.

The real Jim emerges, brandishing a gun, revealing that he was "Job". Claire realizes that Ethan had worked out Jim's scheme. But she doesn't understand why, if Ethan was in on it, did he pretend to be ignorant? "You've asked the question and you're the answer", Jim tells her. Ethan has fallen in love with Jim's wife (and had sex with her in a deleted scene, which makes Jim's "thou shall not covet thy neighbour's wife" line make more sense) and didn't know she was part of the plan.

The Phelps decide to take the money and run. Ethan gives the bearer bonds to Claire, who hands it to Jim, who in turn places them inside his suit. "Claire was wrong about one thing, Jim", says Ethan.
"What's that?", Jim asks. Ethan takes the camera glasses out of his breast pocket and puts them on. Kittridge, in another carriage, turns on his watch, see a video image of Jim. "I'm not the only one who's seen you alive", Ethan responds. Ethan throws over the glasses to Jim, who crushes them in anger.

Claire, thinking Jim is about to shoot Ethan, tells him not to. Instead, Jim turns round and in true "no honour amongst thieves" style, he shoots his wife. Ethan lunges at Jim and they indulge in a brief struggle, before Jim knocks Ethan to the ground. Claire falls over, next to Ethan, as Jim makes his escape. Ethan cradles the dying Claire in his arms before hearing a helicopter pass overhead. The final showdown is set.

Wahey! Another write-up of mine added. And significantly improved, it seems.

Thanks a bunch!

Just thinking - shouldn't this be Lover rather than Family. What's the status on husband-wife killing?
