Leonard is seeking revenge for his wife who was raped and murdered (or so he thinks) by a man Lenny knows only as "John G". Unfortunately, Lenny suffers from short-term memory loss, which prevents him from forming new memories and is also the fault of John G.
To counter this handicap, Leonard leaves a series of clues for himself which ultimately lead him to believe that his old friend Teddy is the killer. This culminates in Leonard bringing Teddy to an abandoned building and shooting him to death. However, in an ironic twist we discover Teddy is NOT John G.
Here's where it gets complicated. The real John G is long dead from the outset of the movie; Teddy (actually a cop) already helped Leonard track him down. However, Lenny couldn't remember the killing. To "help" Leonard, Teddy sets him up with a series of clues leading to various criminals, who Leonard also killed. Leonard learns of this after killing a drug dealer (in the same abandoned building where he later kills Teddy) who he believes to be John G. Enraged, Leonard sets up Teddy by leaving himself false clues.
