Apoc is one of the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar, one of the ships which marks Zion's resistance to the war with the machines. The matrix is a complex veil of reality over the eyes of humankind, in order to keep us compliant while machines use our bodys energy like a battery to power themselves. Zion is the real reality (or is it?) for humans, and it is as depressing as can be.

No wonder then that Cypher, having been woken up from the illusion of the Matrix is keen to go back and forget reality. He strikes a deal with Agent Smith (q.v.) and in exchange for being put back into the Matrix he will betray his comrades.

While heavily pressed inside the matrix, and trying to escape, Cypher, who is in the real world, disconnects Apoc's brain from his body while his brain is inside the matrix. This has the effect of killing him both inside the matrix and, as his brain is dead, in real life too.
