Logan 5 is a Sandman - an authoritative figure charged with hunting down and terminating "runners" - citizens who do not accept mandatory execution by the state at the age of thirty.
Everybody keeps track of their age by means of a Life Crystal mounted in their palm. When it starts blinking red, they need to report for the execution ritual of Carousel, or a Sandman will come after them.
Logan has happily carried out this role, enjoying the full privileges of his rank at the same time.
These perks are considerable, as apart from a death sentence after three decades, this future society is one of decadent utopia. He can therefore enjoy recreational drugs, organised orgies or even dial up a girl on "the circuit" from the comfort of his own living quarters. This circuit features delectable pieces of crumpet such as Jenny Agutter, so kicks the arse out of cable TV.

However, the city computer has assigned Logan with the task of infiltrating the illegal network of runners and locating their base, a place known as "Sanctuary". To aid him in this subterfuge, the computer helpfully advances Logan's life crystal to "Lastday", and the blinking red light panics him into becoming a genuine runner himself.

As part of his escape, he decides to have cosmetic surgery to disguise his face. His rebel contact, Jessica 6 (Jennifer Agutter), takes him to a beauty surgery run by "Doc".

Doc realises that Jenny Agutter's natural beauty makes a mockery of his vocation.

Doc reluctantly agrees to help with the new face, but then receives a telephone call ordering him to kill him instead.
Logan is by this point lying prone underneath a powerful array of laser scalpels, so Doc could murder him at his leisure, but instead makes the fatal mistake of toying with his victim. He directs the machine to make several superficial cuts across Logan's face and body, and then seems surprised when his patient simply jumps up and attacks him.

After a brief scuffle, the combat-trained Sandman manhandles the sadistic doctor onto his own device, and Doc is cut to pieces in a blazing array of sparks and cauterised flesh.


Some people will put themselves through torture just for the sake of a slightly prettier nose...
