Scar's greatest desire is to become king of pride rock.  So when his older brother Mufasa produces a son named Simba, he is less than thrilled, because his chances of ever being king has been destroyed.

Scar isn't loosing a chance at the throne that quickly though, and once Simba is old enough to scamper off on his own, Scar sends some of his Hyena friends out to kill him.  This plan is ruined by Mufasa, who saves the day, and his son, at the last minute.

Scar isn't exactly thrilled to learn that his nephew survived, but the hyenas bring up the fact that the cub wasn't alone.  "What are we supposed to do?  Kill Mufasa?"  Which gives scar an idea, why just put himself back in line for the throne when he can become king immediately by killing both Simba and Mufasa?

The next day, Scar brings Simba down into a gorge promising a surprise "to die for".  Once Simba is in the gorge patiently waiting, Scar signals the hyenas nearby to scare a MASSIVE herd of wildebeest over the edge of the gorge, and right towards Simba.

Scar wastes no time in finding Mufasa and telling him about the stampede, knowing that Mufasa will immediately go and save his son.

Mufasa manages to get through the sampede to his son, and carry Simba to a small ledge on the side of the cliff face.  Injured and exausted, Mufasa then tries to climb the rockface to safety.  His strength giving out just inches from the ledge, he looks up to see his brother sitting above him.  "Scar! Brother! Help me!"

Scar continues to sit there for a moment before lunging forward and sinking his claws deep into Mufasa's paws.  He savors the moment briefly before sneering "Long live the king" and pulling Mufasa's paws away from the cliffside.  Mufasa falls, screaming, back toward the stampeding wildebeest.  We can assume that if the fall didn't kill him, the wildebeest did.
