Allan Quartermain, the film's marksman, has taken time out from searching for King Solomon’s mines and has discovered the hideout of his former boss "M", whom he discovers is truly the infamous James Moriarty of Sherlock Holmes fame. Moriarty has stolen tissue samples from each of these Victorian heroes in order to create a super hero (or villain in his case)
After a quick tussle with the evil genius, Quartermain seems to have Moriarty on the ropes. That is until the faux-invisible man, Sanderson Reed, appears out of nowhere with a knife to Tom Sawyer's throat.
Quartermain is in a dilemma about which of the two targets to aim for, but he somehow manages to find Reed's head, and shooting him, he saves Sawyer. However, this gives Moriarty time to stab Quartermain and attempt to make his escape. Quartermain gives Sawyer his gun, telling Sawyer to aim slowly and carefully whilst he slowly fades into death (echoing a scene from earlier in the film where the impatient American kept rushing his shot and missing the target).
Moriarty, escapes to the false Nautilus sub with the tissue samples of the league and his Fantom mask, which he used to hide his identity earlier in the movie. He almost gets to the sub when Sawyer hits him with a well-placed bullet in the back; Moriarty hits the arctic ice with a thud. Dead.
