Rell, like all Cyclops, knows the time of his death. Naturally, he hopes he can forestall it by not accompanying the adventurers but knows in his heart that they need him.
He therefore saddles up a Firemare and arrives in time to be repeatedly blasted by laser bolts and then hold open an entrance to the fortress long enough for everyone else to enter.
A token attempt is made to stop poor old Rell from being crushed by the closing stone doorway, but once honour is satisfied everyone runs off and leaves him to be transformed into Cyclops Pate.

Rell is crushed to discover he is late to the party.
Trivia note: Rell used to be a teacher until the council cut his funding as he only had one pupil (sorry - OB)

Prince Colwyn tries valiantly to rescue his mono-browed friend, until a laser bolt reminds him that he's not quite so brave after all.

Ergo (the wizard) : "And you Rell, what would you wish for?"
Rell : "Ignorance."

I didn't like the way he was killed at all. He should have had more of an impact at the Black Fortress then let them in and die by getting crushed in the door!

I think you're off about one thing, he doesn't stay behind because he's trying to forestall death; he stays behind because he knew his time was at hand, and if he were to try and avoid it he would "bring great pain upon himself." He later decided that helping his friends was worth horrible pain. Thus, Rell saves the day and manages to get shot to hell and slowly crushed.

your right on the money, he suffered greatly to see the job if not done at least have a good chance by letting the company in the black fortress, i would have liked to see him make more of an impact but it fits with what was told of his ability to see his own death. Love this movie!!!
