Joe Perko is a member of the Petrox Explorer's crew, and one of the four sailors who accompanies Jack Prescott and Carnahan (q.v.) on their mission to rescue Dwan from the giant gorilla, Kong.

Like the others, Joe meets his end when the group encounters Kong whilst crossing a log bridge over a canyon. The men shoot at him and Kong retaliates by grabbing the log and rolling it back and forth, causing the men to start falling into the canyon. Despite managing to keep his feet moving with the rolling of the log, much in the fashion of a lumberjack, Joe can't keep it up and becomes the third sailor to fall off.
