Ben Hayes is the first mate on the S.S. Venture. When Ann Darrow is given to King Kong by the natives of Skull Island, Captain Englehorn selects Hayes to lead the search party, alongside Jack Driscoll. He manages to survive a CGI dinosaur stampede that claimed the lives of several of the search party's members and the group reaches a deep canyon bridged by a fallen log.

Hayes crosses the chasm first, to test whether it is safe, and then calls for the rest of the party to join him. Suddenly Kong appears and seizes Hayes.

Unaware of his own strength, Kong all but crushes him. Hayes does have the wherewithal to cock his pistol, and he attempts to shoot Kong in the eye. The shot is more like a minor irritant to Kong however, and he duly responds by casually tossing Hayes across the canyon.

GTake your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape....

A casual toss to Kong though is like a violent toss to Hayes, and he smashes in to the cliff wall with bone-shattering force. If this was not sufficient to kill him, then the subsequent descent in to the bottomless canyon certainly is.

You can just make out a blurry CGI Hayes coming towards the lens / Hayes is the fall guy

Hollywood is not subtle with its deaths, and later in the film, when the others in the party are at the bottom of the canyon, we see Hayes' crumpled body, thereby guaranteeing that this shipmate will not be in any sequels....

Then Jimmy starts screaming his lungs out because Hayes was a "father" figure to him.

Hayes reminds me of Mace Windu. His attitude and the fact that he is also African American.

Watching the movie the other day I realized you could edit out the entire Hayes/Jimmy subplot and it wouldn't affect the movie at all, really.
Comment 3 by 'commanderblue' (reply to this comment)
Lol, I never noticed that. Weird.

It apppears that the 205/1976 versions of King Kong have ended up grouping with each other...
Comment 5 by 'Kooshmeister' (reply to this comment)
Yeah, I noticed that. And when the entries for the 1933 film get added, methinks they'll end up lumped in with these unless we do something to differentiate the three titles.

I will forward it on to the technical department - it shouldn't be too hard to sort by title and then by film date.

Mind you i am notorious for thinking tweaks are easily done within minutes, only to find out our programmers have had to spend weeks coding to make it work.....

I think u might want to add how he was shooting Kong with his tommy gun.

Self-sacrifice as Hayes was telling the others to run when he shot and he knew Donkey Kong here would kill him when he fired.
