While Ellie Sattler goes into the bunker to turn the power back on, Robert Muldoon, Jurassic Park's Australian "game warden”, whose job is to catch stray dinosaurs, covers her.

While Ellie barely escapes a raptor that was lying in wait in the bunker, Muldoon tracks down another. It leads him further into the overgrowth foliage, standing quietly as it watches him load his tranquilizer gun.

It fails to dawn on Muldoon that this dinosaur looks WAY too compliant for the situation to not be a trap. As Dr. Grant had discussed earlier, raptors are intelligent pack hunters, and they deploy a hunting strategy in which one plays decoy while the others sneak around to ambush their prey from the sides. Muldoon discovers a little too late that the raptor he was about to shoot was the decoy, as another suddenly emerges from the bushes right next to him.

"Clever girl..." Muldoon utters, in both shock, and perhaps admiration, before the raptor tackles him, jaws clamped over his head. Fortunately, we are not treated to the sight of what happens next, but we can assume it is not pretty.

I believe that I'm the only one who has an old Topps comic showing him surviving, yeah, riiight.

I remember that comic. It was quite good, though it was totally unbelievable that he survived. As I remember it, he said "Aw, I took care of them myself. I knew how to handle them." and that's all he said about the matter.

His face got torn off.

Which is a bit weird, as during his face-off (ahem) with the velocaraptor, it goes for his chest.
Comment 4 by 'E-man' (reply to this comment)
self-sacrifice anyone? I mean he didn't know the other one was there yet he was still distracting the one he did know from attacking Staler

Muldoon was a badass.

Cool! I'm glad we have more old comic book fans in here. E-Man also had an interesting suggestion, is Muldoon sacrificing himself? Although it seemed like he was pretty sure of himself.

Were they seriously using a SPAS-12 model for a tranq gun? Doubtful as later in the movie Grant and Ellie have one as well, and it leaves bullet holes in the glass of the security door.
Comment 9 by 'Kooshmeister' (reply to this comment)
Muldoon wasn't using a tranq gun. He went in with the full intent of killing the raptors.
Comment 10 by 'DarkSaber' (reply to this comment)
I'd agree with that! Don't forget his first line in the film is 'They should all be destroyed!' when at the Raptor paddock. Man I still quote that line to this day!
Comment 11 by 'Damar' (reply to this comment)
In the weapon cabinet and earlier in the movie, they also have M16's. But they never use them effectively, thanks to Spielberg's 'no shooting of dinos' rule that is present in all three movies.
Comment 12 by 'Kooshmeister' (reply to this comment)
Yeah, I hate that. They do use guns and apparently kill the raptor at the beginning of this movie, though; after Muldoon yells, "Shoot her!" for the zillionth time we hear gunshots. But that's the one time time guns are used at all effectively in these movies.

It's especially annoying in The Lost World, where like fifty armed mercenaries never get a shot off while being attacked by raptors. I just don't buy it.

Don't forget Pete Postlethwaite's character hitting the T-Rex with a tranquilizer gun (off-screen).

Of course, that was after his team ran for the hills like imbeciles after the T-Rex attacks their tent.
Comment 14 by 'Kooshmeister' (reply to this comment)
Yeah, and as I said, most of those guys had guns, they could have easily just shot and killed the damn thing. Dunno why Ludlow would bring along such skittish mercenaries.

Incidentally, OT in Muldoon's thread, but I just wanna point out that supposed "good guy" Nick took the bullets out of Roland's (Pete Postlethwaite's character) gun, meaning that the deaths of Burke, Carter, Ajay and every single mercenary chased into the tall grass rest squarely on Nick's hands.

Comment 18 by 'Kooshmeister' (reply to this comment)
hiyyah this is so not true ok so get a life u loser
Sadly, it is. Because Nick took the bullets out of Roland's gun, Roland was unable to immediately kill the rexes, and had to fumble for an alternative weapon (the tranq gun) while one of the dinosaurs chased (almost) everyone to their deaths. So if Nick hadn't done this, then Roland, the only one who kept his head during the attack, could have saved everybody or at least some of them. I don't think this makes Nick evil at all, he just didn't know the eventual outcome of his actions.

Now, go watch the movie again and learn to spell.
