Morton is a farmer who lives on the island. Specifically, he raises horses, and upon finding one of them dead without its skeleton, he all but swears revenge against the bone-slurping monstrosities that did it; the Silicates.

During Dr. David West and Dr. Brian Stanley's early attempts to destroy the Silicates, Morton is among the men selected by Roger Campbell, the island's head man, to assist them. Morton's job is to lug around a box of Molotov cocktails (which, because this film is British, are referred to as petrol bombs) and light the fuses for David and Brian. But since the Silicates are immune to pretty much everything, this does not work against them.

Then, for reasons we can only speculate upon but probably involve wanting revenge for his horse, Morton takes two of the Molotovs and says, "I'll get up closer." Which, in red shirt speak translates to "I'll go and get myself killed." Morton does get closer, but only manages to toss one of his cocktails before the others look up and see that, inexplicably, there is a Silicate in the branches of a tree directly above Morton's head.

The question of how the Silicate climbed up the tree is left unanswered

Morton looks up and sees it too, but proceeds to just stand there doing absolutely nothing to save himself as the monster falls out of the tree, lands on top of him and wrapping its tentacle around his neck uses its bone-dissolving enzyme to relieve Morton of his skeleton.

The first attempt at Human-Silicate hybridisation ends unsucessfully
