A world-famous oncologist, Dr. Lawrence Phillips only wanted to cure cancer and help millions of patients around the world. A pity then that he's an impatient and careless doofus who, against the advice of his assistant, Carson, rushes ahead with their final experiment.

Precisely how Phillips dies is something of a mystery. Just as the opening titles begin (Phillips and his colleagues only appear alive in the film's pre-title sequence), the screen turns red and there is a flash of light followed by the sound of breaking glass, then we see glimpses of all the scientists laying dead on the floor where they stood, implying some sort of explosion kills them when the experiment goes wrong.

However when Doctors David West, Brian Stanley and Reginald Landers (q.v.) arrive later in the film, Phillips and his colleagues are de-skeletonized, giving the impression that they have been victims of their creations, the Silicates.

Whether Phillips actually died during the "explosion" and then his corpse was de-boned post-mortem, or the "explosion" was just a symbolic thing and Phillips was de-boned while still alive like everyone else who dies in this film, it's difficult to tell. It's possible, however, that Phillips was merely rendered unconscious by the apparent explosion, and then had his bones dissolved by the Silicates.
