Rasputin is the mad Russian monk who has, in this film’s history, a great fascination with the occult. He was the one who brought Hellboy from the Ogru Jahad, the seven gods of chaos, through a Nazi portal on a German controlled Scottish island in 1944. Having lost Hellboy to American GIs, Rasputin is sucked into his own portal and possessed by Ogdru Jahad, only to be revived 60 years later by his minions Ilsa Haupstein and Karl Ruprecht Kroenen (q.v.).

Hellboy is about to resurrect The Ogdru Jahad; The Seven Gods of Chaos and bring about the end of the world for Rasputin in exchange for his girlfriend, Liz Sherman's soul. To unlock his restraints, Hellboy says his true name; Anung un-Rama, this not only does the aforementioned task, but also re-grows Hellboy’s shaven-off horns, generating a sphere of flame above his head and causing the moon and sky to turn a fiery red.

Hellboy’s partner, John Myers looks on in stunned silence as Hellboy sticks his stone hand into the first hole inside the stone tablet that has kept Ogdru dormant for all these years (since 1945) and consequentially unlocks the first half of the tablet, a beam shoots from the stone into the sky, a gigantic tentacled monster with seven heads breaks out from it's icy prison in the vacuum of space as Rasputin tells Hellboy to open the final lock.

John Myers slips his freezing, bloody hand out from his chains and seizing the nearby crucifix, which Hellboy threw away, he shouts to his partner, "Remember who you are!" and throws it toward the now full-demon. The holy power of the cross sizzles and leaves a mark on his palm. "Believe me," says Rasputin "I have lived long enough to know, not a tear will be shed for this world!"

"You have a choice!" the young agent exclaims, "your father gave you that" Hellboy thinks of Myers' statement, then breaks off his horns, dissipating the beam of fire and sending the Ogdru-Jahad back to it's icy tomb, returning the world to normal.

Rasputin gets a chance to ask in bewilderment "What have you done?" before Hellboy stabs the mystic with his horn "I chose" Hellboy says, and leaves the Russian sorcerer to keel over and die, as he goes over to Liz.

Rasputin says, with his few remaining breaths "look what you have done, you have killed me, an insignificant man but you have brought forth..." as something in his head writhes around "a God..." Hellboy turns to find a different strange tentacled creature emerging from Rasputin's stomach, he tells Myers to go with him as the creature emerges from his belly and continues to grow larger. As the trio of heroes leave, Ilsa holds Grigory in her arms. "Hell will hold no surprises for us" she whispers to him as the beast crushes them both with a massive tentacle.
