Chubbs Peterson is a former golfer. In 1965, they said that he would be the next Arnold Palmer of golf; however, they would not let him on the pro circuit. At first Happy thinks this is because he's black, but Chubbs responds with a classic line: "Hell no! Damned alligator BIT my hand off!" (in the water hazard down in Florida!).
Later Chubbs and Gilmore celebrate a victory at the putt-putt course and exchange presents. Chubbs gives Gilmore a hockey stick, hoping that a more familiar sport will help him in the game; Happy says that he also has a gift for Chubbs and holding up a large present for him, Chubbs begins to open it excitedly. Gilmore explains "You know that alligator that got your arm?" Well, I got it's head!"
Chubbs opens the gift to reveal the head of the very same alligator that took off his hand all those years ago, that Happy killed earlier in the movie! Surprised and frightened, Chubbs backs away and directly out the window, where he falls to his death.
Towards the end of the movie, we see Chubbs again, and notice he has been reunited with his hand; this scene in Gilmore's imagination gives Happy the confidence to win the final golf hole at the end of the film. At the VERY end of the movie, we see Chubbs, the alligator, and Abe Lincoln all peering down at Happy from Heaven, thanking him for winning the tournament.
Former Friends? They appeared to be friends.
I put "Master Pupil" which I thought was enough.
Hey, if you're putting Chubbs on here you should also put down Shooter McGavin's death too.
Yeah they were friends but Chubbs was the master and Happy was the pupil.
Why Shooter Mcgavin?
Yeah, Shooter just got chased and beat up is all.
No I actually think they lynched him. Think about it, a crowd that large all wailing on Shooter isn't that good, especially since Mr. Larsen was amongst them. I'm pretty sure Shooter died at the end of the movie.
That's still a pretty big assumption to make.
Not really. As far as villains in comedy movies go, Shooter was pretty damn evil. So as far as karma goes I think he really did have death coming to him. Besides there were quite a few fans. Even if he didn't die (which he most likely did) I still think he'd end up crippled for life. I'm going to also rephrase my point of how the guy who played Jaws and shrugged a nail to the head was among the crowd so I don't think Shooter has much of a chance there.
