You gotta feel sorry for acerbic weatherman, Phil Connors. Not only is he trapped doing the weather, which in his opinion is far beneath his talents, but his fellow newscasters jibe at the fact he has to do an annual pilgrimage to Punxsutawney, to see if a groundhog will wake up and declare whether winter is over.

His demeanour is not made any better when a freak storm descends on the region, blocking all roads out of town, thereby meaning they have to spend the night in this backwater.

This is no ordinary blizzard though, as it soon becomes apparent that Phil is stuck in some kind of time warp and is made to constantly relive the same day over and over again. At first this is fun, but after countless iterations of the same day (we don't know the exact number he has been through when he reaches breaking point).

After repeatedly getting stood-up by Rita and feeling the weight of time, Phil seems more than a little intent to end it all. Phil determines to kill himself and take the groundhog, who he believes is somehow connected to these events, with him.

Phil [Connors] walks over to the truck with the the groundhog inside, hijacks it and starts a chase with police, with Rita and Larry following in their news truck. They all end up at a quarry and the police have cornered Phil by blocking the only way out. As the truck returns, revving up, the mayor tells police to shoot for the head. Phil shouts "it's show time" before driving his truck off the cliff, crashing into the ground far below.

"He might be OK," Larry says assuringly to the shocked Rita, when the truck explodes into a huge fireball. "Well, no, probably not now...," he adds. Phil is dead.

But wait! The screen fades and we end up back looking at Phil's clock, and he wakes to Sonny and Cher again. His death never happened. So begins a catalogue of death sequences.

Going down to the hotel, the owner greets him. She then asks if Phil would like some toast as he yanks the toaster out of the plug socket and takes it upstairs. Plugging it into a bathroom plug socket, he gets into a filled bath and pushes the bread in, before carrying it in with him. It cuts away to the lobby, as the lights go out and the owner gasps.

Next, we see Phil, having survived the toaster incident, waiting for a truck. He then steps out in front of it before the screen goes the black and we hear him getting hit by the truck.

Then we cut to a building and as the camera pans up we see Phil on top of the bell tower ready to jump, which he soon does, spreading his arms as he falls. This leads us to the local hospital where Rita and Larry are confirming the body is Phil's. Rita sobs. "He was a really, really great guy," Larry says insincerely as the white sheet is placed back over Phil's head.

Always believing he was destined for some grand purpose, Phil seems to have worked out why he can't die, and he shares this hypothesis with us when he is discussing things through with Rita at the Cafe."I'm a God, not the God," he tells her. Rita is understandably unimpressed at this egoism, but Phil goes on to explain "I have been stabbed, shot, poisoned, frozen, hung, electrocuted and burned," before concluding, "I am an immortal".

So in that one line, Phil mentions he has also been killed/died in 6 other ways that we haven't seen. And that my friends, is how you get a death with over a dozen catergories.

As noted in another thread, I think the amount of categories for this death is a bit controversial... grinning smiley

"I am an immortal" should be emboldened.

Trivia: This was my first ever submission. Yay!

there might be quite a few grabs to show as many categories i can, as that OB is an untrusting fellow, so we need to show him it really is a lot of categories!! He is no doubt aggrieved his panic room death has been toppled from top of the "most categories" listing grinning smiley

I'd take the cap where he talks to Rita with subs on, just to prove (although my version actually left out some (!), so what's in the submission was me actually taking it from the film).
Comment 7 by 'Matt' (reply to this comment)
Here's one that should up the count to 16: Chase, because the police chase him when he hijacks the truck.
Comment 8 by 'Mr. Briggs Inc.' (reply to this comment)
HAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!! Seems you forgot "Cheating Death"! Knock it up to 17!
Comment 9 by 'Pyro' (reply to this comment)
I wouldn't add "Cheating Death", as his inability to die was not by any foolish mistake on the writing, rather it was played entirely for laughs and for story purposes to humorously depict the hopelessness of his situation.

Briggs is right, put in cheating death! DO IT!!!
