After barely surviving the initial encounter with Stripe, Billy attempts to head gremlin leader off at the department store fountain, knowing if Stripe were to come into contact with water, he will re-spawn and be able to replace the batch of gremlins that had been destroyed earlier.

Unfortunately, Stripe has not only found the fountain first and has been waiting for Billy to arrive, but he has also found a pistol to make sure the last thing Billy sees is Stripe's victory.

Billy is forced to take cover as Stripe fires several rounds at him. Deciding not to delay this any longer, Stripe confidently climbs atop the fountain and plunges his hand into the water, causing his back to blister, where new gremlins would soon be forming.

At this moment, Gizmo, who has rigged up a remote control car to drive just as efficiently without a remote, speeds in, surprising Stripe. Gizmo avoids a shot fired at him by driving up a snow shovel display, which sends him flying into some garden plants. As he gets up, Gizmo finds himself staring face-to-face with the barrel of Stripe's gun.

But Gizmo's not out of ideas yet. Having noticed some morning sun pouring in through some skylights, the Mogwai is aware that daylight, which is fatal to gremlins, has arrived, and there is a handy blind right next to him. Rushing for the blind, Gizmo gives it a yank as Stripe empties his round. He holds on to the blind, so it pulls him up the wall causing the bullet to miss him. But his momentum is too strong and he crashes into the ceiling, falls back down to the floor, but luckily is safely hidden behind some plants as sunlight bursts into the room, and falls directly onto Stripe.

The gremlin has much more to worry about than sunburn, as his skin begins to burn and melt off of him rapidly. Billy's father, Rand, and his girlfriend Kate, along with dog Barney arrive in time to see Stripe's horribly decomposed body stagger about for a moment, then collapse into one of the fountain pools. As they prepare to leave, Billy remains unsure if Stripe's body is still capable of spawning at this point. Suddenly, Stripe's skeletal remains burst from the water and lunge at Billy, but this is all the life that was left in it, collapsing on the floor just a few feet from Billy and his dog as the bones then begin to fall apart and melt away, eventually leaving only a small puddle of green ooze on the floor.
