Kuhn is a Gestapo agent, one of the two who escorted Roger Bartlett, aka "Big X," to Stalag Luft III at the beginning of the film, warning him that if he tried to escape again the consequences would be dire indeed. And when Bartlett and 71 other prisoners do escape, Kuhn and his fellow Gestapo are out combing the surrounding countryside for them.
It is while searching a train station that Kuhn hits the jackpot. Or so he thinks. He's busy scrutinising a young blonde man who is making a show out of hiding his face when he happens to glance over and notice none other than Roger Bartlett in line nearby. Sneering, he starts towards Bartlett, only to be tackled to the ground from behind by the young blonde fellow, who, it turns out, is another escapee, Eric Ashley-Pitt. Kuhn draws his gun, and he and Ashley-Pitt struggle over it. Somehow, Ashley-Pitt manages to twist Kuhn's arm so that he's pointing the barrel of the pistol at his own chest. The gun discharges, firing into Kuhn, killing him instantly.
