After having escaped Stalag Luft III, Hendley and Blythe make their way across the countryside and manage to get aboard a train. For quite some time they remain aboard, until they decide to prematurely get off to avoid Gestapo officers patrolling and asking for papers (this is after the news is out about the escape of 75 men).
After jumping off the last car, they make their way to a German airfield. Blythe, who is blind as a bat after being in the camp so long, is set in the corner by Hendley, who knocks out a German guard and takes his rifle. After looking around, Hendley spots a fueled and ready to go training plane that has two seats in the glass-enclosed cockpit. He sets the rifle inside and moves Blythe to the front of the plane where he inserts the screw for starting up the plane.
"Colin, when I say go, you turn the screw as hard as you can, but not a moment early! You hit it early and you'll get a mouth full of propeller."
After they finally start the thing, they both hop inside and take off. However, the Germans in the radio tower notice and pick up the phone, broadcasting their current course and altitude, plus the plane's serials and type.
All is well for the two escapees. Hendley even exclaims, "The Alps! Over this range then 20 more minutes and we've got it made!"
"Splendid!" replies Blythe.
Suddenly, the engine begins to sputter until it cuts out. They are losing speed and altitude, until Hendley makes the decision to crash land on an open field ahead over a tree-line and a hill. However, he is unable to, and the plane smacks right into two trees, snapping off both wings and landing in a ditch. Colin gets out with a scratched head, and Hendley with a leg wound and a cracked skull. The plane begins to burn as Hendley orders Colin to go over the hill, for he shall follow. As Colin does this, he looks onward to see cars and trucks of troops unloading. A sniper aims, and Colin manages to get out a muttered, "Hendley!" before a shot pierces the countryside. As he lays dying in Hendley's arms, Colin manages to say good-bye.
"It's quite alright. I want to thank you... for getting me... out..."
