Sonny, finding that his wife has never been up for this "Sicilian Thing", is not only furious but is murderous. Ignoring Tom Hagen's advice not to go out, he gets in his car and speeds out of the driveway, looking to let off some steam. Tom grabs a car and with several men, and they head out after him.

Sonny approaches the checkpoint and has a guard verify his papers. Instead of opening the gates though, the guard closes the window and hides in the booth. Then, about 20 mobsters pop up and shoot at Sonny.

Horrified, Sonny panics and tries to get out and start his car but bullets rip through the windshield and doors, rocking Sonny back and forth, and he spits up a small amount of blood. He manages to climb across the left seat and out the door, only to be shot repeatedly.

Sonny yells out as even more bullets throw him against the car while he screams. Another burst of lead ends his screaming though as they finally pierce his lungs and Sonny slides off the side of the car and falls in the middle of the road.

One mobster then steps forward and ends Sonny's life while he squirms like an impaled worm, and the whole gang hop in four cars parked to the side of the booths and speed off into the distance just as Tom and his men arrive no more than ten seconds later.

Sonny does NOT beat his wife. What actually happens is his brother-in-law, Carlo, beats his sister. Earlier in the film upon learning what Carlo has been doing, Sonny tracked his ass down and beats him within an inch of his life, warning him never to hurt his sister again. Then he gets a call from her saying Carlo has been at it again, prompting Sonny to drive over to give his brother-in-law another talking-to (using his fists), whereupon he is ambushed and it is later revealed Carlo did it this time in order to lure Sonny away from the safety of the Corleone compound, using his concern for his sister's well-being to get him killed at the tollbooth by a rival gang.

As for any wife-beating on Sonny's part, well, considering the contempt he has for a wife-beater like Carlo, I think it's a safe bet he's not one himself. In any event, he isn't one in the novel. Please amend this.

Is this a Death Trap?

Using people and not machines?

It's definitely a Death Trap entry, because Sonny is lured to where he's ambushed by a phone call informing him that his brother-in-law has been beating his sister again. Something that this writeup totally forgets to mention anywhere. Sonny is on his way to pound on Carlo for hurting his sister, not suspecting that Carlo is working for a rival family and is beating his wife just to get Sonny mad enough to come out there, where those guys can ambush him.

Methinks this needs to be rewritten at some point. Roadkill obviously didn't pay much attention to the plot.
