Mark has just escaped from the mental institute with Lori's boyfriend Will in order to warn Lori about Freddy. As he waits for Will to return from picking up Lori from the bonfire party, Mark makes the typical mistake of dozing off, sending him into one of Freddy's nightmares.

In this dream, Mark goes to the bathroom to retrieve some pills to help him stay awake, but as he closes the medicine cabinet he briefly sees Freddy standing behind him, startling him and causing him to drop the pill down the sink. Freddy is nowhere to be found, though.

Then he sees the bathtub filled with bloody water, and Freddy, in the form of Mark's dead brother, appears, venting his spleen about how everyone has forgotten about the terror he used to cause, which nullifies his power over the children of Elm Street.

However, Freddy has become sick of Jason hogging all the limelight and so nowt he plans to make a big comeback. To do this, Freddy makes a pool of blood come from the bathtub, spilling over Mark's feet, when suddenly barbed spikes suddenly rise from the blood and binds Mark to the floor.

Freddy then appears before Mark, demanding he send a message to his friends so he can make his comeback. Mark, not about to let that happen though, and so he refuses to do anything for him. Freddy decides that he'll send the message himself, and so he causes Mark to burst into flame as Mark is screaming for someone to wake him up.

Will and Lori arrive in time to see Mark's body get flung around the room on fire, before four large cuts appear on mark's face from the invisible Freddy's glove, killing him. Mark's body then falls to the floor with the message "Freddy's Back" burned into his torso.
