The Narrator is tied to a chair on a high floor of an empty credit building. With the Narrator is Tyler Durden, who is holding a gun and mocking him, telling him how he would not exist if it were not for the Narrator.
The Narrator realizes that because Tyler is holding a gun, and Tyler is an extension of his mind, he must really be holding the gun. As soon as he realises this, a gun appears in The Narrator's hand, which does not concern Tyler, until the Narrator puts the gun in his own mouth.
The Narrator says "My eyes are open" while looking at Tyler and pulls the trigger in his own mouth. The gun goes off, but the bullet exits out of the left cheek/neck of The Narrator, near his ear.
The Narrator symbolically shows that he has no need for Tyler anymore. Tyler says “What’s that smell?" and the audience realises that he has a gaping bullet wound in the back of his head. At this point, he falls to the ground and disappears.
